Résumé
In semi-arid regions of Senegal, climate change is a serious threat that exacerbates the vulnerability of households. For many families that rely on agriculture as a livelihood option, climate-related environmental upheaval, such as floods and drought, can be a factor in their decision to migrate from rural areas to other regions inside or outside the country.
Internal and external migration are increasingly being used as an adaptation strategy by communities, and remittances have a demonstrable positive impact on poverty reduction and the diversification of household incomes, as well as contributing to providing better financial means for communities to cope with climate change.
This French-language paper aims to address the links between migration and population resilience dynamics in semi-arid regions of Senegal. To do this, the report examines different variables in Senegalese migration – including magnitude, migrants’ profiles, evolution or trends through time and new migratory pathways and destinations. It also focuses on the issue of migrant remittances, and their impact on the dynamics of resilience in semi-arid regions of the country.
